Researchers in Braunschweig develop optimised aircraft wings
One of the goals of the Cluster of Excellence for Sustainable Aviation is to reduce emissions and energy consumption. The flow behaviour of aircraft, especially at the wings, plays a role in this. For experiments on this topic, the researchers use the Braunschweig Low-Speed Wind Tunnel (NWB) of the Foundation German-Dutch Wind Tunnel (DNW). The wind tunnel enables a very low degree of turbulence, so that boundary layer behaviour of the flow similar to that in free flight experiments can be simulated here.

Visit BDO committee of the Senate to NLR and DNW
"Aerospace plays a strategic role. It is included in eight out of ten areas of the Dutch national technology strategy," states CEO Tineke van der Veen. "Space technology, for example, plays a crucial role in mapping migration flows, provides insights into the climate for food security and supplies the Ministry of Defence with vital operational information. Moreover, the knowledge development on drones is becoming more urgent, not only for Defence, but also for civil applications.”
