Friday 20 June, the BDO committee of the Senate (Eerste Kamer der Staten-Generaal) visited NLR and DNW in Marknesse. This committee prepares legislative proposals in the areas of foreign affairs, defence and development co-operations. During the visit, various topics were discussed, such as the deployment of satellites and drones, the use of lightweight composite materials and hydrogen applications.

The SE²A Cluster of Excellence for Sustainable Aviation at the Technical University of Braunschweig claims to have succeeded in making aircraft wings more aerodynamically efficient. According to a press release from the Technical University of Braunschweig, the use of specially developed, 3D-printed suction panels has stabilised and optimised the boundary layer – the area of airflow immediately adjacent to the wing.

At Marknesse, NLR and HVC have developed a new, large solar park. The produced power is fed into the national grid using the DNW-LLF electrical infrastructure. On 08 July 2024, this largest solar park in the Netherlands was officially opened. This solar park is situated on the NLR/DNW terrain in Marknesse and has 74.000 solar panels with a capacity of 46MWp and is able to supply 43-milion kilowatt solar power.

DNW is proud to have been able to contribute to a successful and safe launch of the ESA’s Ariane 6 rocket. In 2017, a wind tunnel model designed and manufactured by NLR was tested in the DNW-HST and DNW-SST. The goal of these tests was to characterize the steady and unsteady loads on the total launcher and on the various launcher elements (e.g. boosters) during the transonic and supersonic flight phases.
